Students will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, create new functionality in the lab through the development of creative and innovative solutions, and contribute towards meaningful research supporting human spaceflight.
Team Needs:
We are looking for highly motivated students with hands-on hardware/software skills. Team members will be expected to take hardware with little existing documentation, test its capabilities, and document their findings. We are also looking for students with strong organizational skills, familiar with platforms such as Calendly, etc for scheduling and coordinating human research studies. Note: Any team members directly involved with human subjects data collection will be required to complete CITI human subjects training. |
Description:
The SAFE lab is conducting several research projects related to human performance in Aerospace environments: One project aims to develop and validate a ground-based spaceflight docking simulator that replicates the in-flight vestibular disturbances that astronauts experience. We are integrating a motion simulator that provides 360 degree rotation in three axes with a virtual reality (VR) docking simulator and a form of brain stimulation that interferes with the vestibular system. Another project is exploring the impacts of lunar and martian gravity on ambulation. We are using an altered gravity treadmill that can offload up to 80% of a subject’s body weight, and will record motion capture (IMU) and muscle recruitment (EMG) data. We are putting together a team to support these research efforts. We are looking for students to: – test the capabilities of new equipment in the lab, develop protocols for using this equipment, and integrate multiple pieces of equipment for syncronized data collection – research commercially available and/or custom options for expanding the capabilities of our motion simulator (e.g., integrating helicopter controllers for helicopter motion simulator), and setup/integrate this equipment into our existing systems – coordinate recruitment of study participants, schedule sessions, and assist with data colleciton/analysis |
