Description:

Are you interested in urban soils, water quality, flood control and/or stormwater management systems? If you answered yes, this may be the project for you! The goal of this research is to determine if using waste materials, created from manufacturing processes, as a component in rain garden design is suitable for meeting the needs of stormwater management. This research will be conducted in the greenhouse using PVC columns. Synthetic stormwater will be applied to the columns and outflow will be collected and analyzed. Treatments will be assessed on their ability to remove excess nutrients and pollutants from stormwater, as well as their suitability as a plant growth medium. Undergraduate research assistants will help with applying the stormwater; collecting the outflow at various time points after application; weighing columns; and collecting plant tissue samples. Students should expect to dedicate ~5 hours per week on this project, along with the weekly team meeting. |
