Fall 2020: Organizing and analyzing data for environmental applications

Affiliations:
Project Leader: Dhruva Kathuria
kathuria.dhruva@tamu.edu
Biological & Agricultural Engineering
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Binayak Mohanty, Ph.D.
Meeting Times:
Flexible
Team Size:
4
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
I will be willing to teach basic data manipulation, statistical and machine learning techniques (all these skills are valuable in industry today) to the mentees; authorship on all the research resulting from this project; opportunity to present the research at conferences
Team Needs:
I would be willing to work with 4 under-graduate students and mentor them. Based on the skills of the student, we will plan a project mostly focused on the use of data in understanding the environment.
Description:
The objective of the project is to learn how to obtain freely available environmental data e.g. – rainfall, soil moisture, temperature, land-cover, etc. from agencies such as NASA and USGS and convert them into a format helpful in doing data analysis. The student will learn how to clean data and do basic data analysis. The data cleaning and analysis will be done in a programming language preferable to the student (such as R, Python or Matlab). Though prior experience in programming is helpful, its not mandatory. The student will be taught how to carry out basic commands and how to obtain and organize different types and formats of data. The extent of the data analysis will depend on the skill and willingness of the student
