Description:

This study seeks to gather more in-depth information about how disasters affect organizations like businesses and nonprofits. I am proposing the use of a mixed-method research approach to study businesses and nonprofits that were impacted by the 2017 Hurricane Harvey. The approach combines both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods using face to face and telephone surveys to obtain disruption and recovery information from organizational leaders within the impacted region. The survey instrument assesses the perceptions and behavior of the owners/managers throughout the recovery process. The instrument is designed to explore operational interruptions, disaster recovery, financial stability, mitigation behaviors, preparedness behaviors, and overall risk-perceptions toward hazardous impacts. Using this tool, I will be able to obtain a general assessment of how organizations are recovering. The survey will involve a three-stage stratified random sample of 300 businesses and 200 non-profits. The proposed survey administration method will use an adapted version of Dillman (2000) method that will combine the use of telephone and in-person surveying techniques. This proposal provides a full description of the proposed methods used to design and conduct the survey instrument as well as analyze the collected data. Ultimately this research seeks to provide recommendations for practice that can better support business owners and non-profit leaders in preparing for disaster recovery efforts in their community. Please note to participate in this study you must be interviewed, approved, and enroll in the URPN 491: Research course as an elective. Also, at this time we are only approving sophomore level students and higher. |
