Fall 2020: Novel Fast Charging Solution for minimizing charging time of Electric Vehicles

Team members will have exciting opportunities to work on mathematical modeling, simulation and advanced control of different power electronic converters and EV charging system. Novel methodologies developed will be reported/presented by team members (as co-authors) in reputed journals/magazine/conferences
Team Needs:
Preference will be given to students with background (taken/enrolled) in any of the following subjects: Power Electronics, Power Systems, Advance Control/Classic Control Systems, Electric/Hybrid Vehicles.
Description:
Advancement in Electric Vehicle (EV) for replacing the conventional IC engines are facing three major hindrances: (a) unavailability of dedicated charging infrastructure, (b) range anxiety, and (c) longer charging time. To address this concern, commercial charging stations with fast charging capability (up to 350kW at each port) are being installed. However, there are two major concerns: (a) line frequency transformer (operating at 60Hz) takes up a lot of space, and (b) connection of charging station to low voltage line disrupts the entire line. To mitigate these issues, the project aims at exploring the design, research, and development possibilities of connecting the charging station to high voltage transmission lines. Aspects such as power quality performance, novel charging methods, minimization of hardware components, and replacing low-frequency transformer with medium frequency transformer would be investigated. Proposed methods would be modelled in SIMULINK for verification
