Unlike electric vehicle and aircraft propulsion system, in the ship propulsion system, the propulsion system is designed to operate at low speed (around 80 – 200 rpm) with very high torque output. This is due to the heavy weight of the ship and high friction resistance. For operation at the required speeds, the drive must be designed for low fundamental frequency (12 – 20Hz) and a suitable gear mechanism must be provided. Additionally, for improved performance, costly and specially designed 12 – pulse transformer (60Hz) is used for controlling the electric drive. Conclusively, the system is bulky, costly, and less efficient. For addressing these concerns, two main aspects are explored during the project. The first aspect would be the development of a gearless electric drive using a novel power converter. Secondly, 60Hz transformer will be attempted to replace with medium frequency transformer along with improved control algorithm strategy. This is obtained at low space requirements and higher efficiency. |
