Spring 2024: History and Archaeology of Coastal West Africa

Team Needs:
Required Skills:
-Organized, professional, communicative, and creative;
-Ability to solve problems with minimal supervision;
-Enthusiasm and willingness to learn.It’s a major plus (but not required) if you have any of the following skills:
-Fluency or familiarity with foreign languages, especially African languages;
-Audio transcription experience;
-Prior use of citation software such as EndNote, Zotero, RefWorks, etc.;
-Knowledge of African history, archaeology, culture, society, politics, and/or economics.
Description:
West Africans shaped our globalized, modern world, but the history and archaeology of many important places in West Africa have never been systematically studied. The goal of this project is to investigate the historical archaeology of several countries in West Africa using a variety of sources and approaches (such as oral history, museum collections, and analysis of archaeological and historical data collected in the field in West Africa).

Some of the collaborative, dynamic projects and skills our research team will work on this semester include:
-transcribing oral histories with elders from Liberia;
-analysis of museum objects from around the world;
-historical research on countries in West Africa and Europe;
-3D modeling, photogrammetry, or other digital reconstruction.
