Affiliations: STEM Research Leadership
Project Leader: Luc Nguyen

Mechanical Engineering

Faculty Mentor: Chandler Benjamin, Ph.D.
Meeting Times: TBA
Team Size:
4
Open Spots: 4
Special Opportunities:
Undergraduates will receive opportunities to earn co-authorship on publications and present at any appropriate undergraduate conferences if they desire to. You will learn a lot about the field of biomechanics and do meaningful work that could vastly improve our understanding of arterial diseases. You can also take research credit while working in our lab.
Team Needs:
We will teach you everything you need to know. Time management and consistency are the most sought after qualities in our undergrads.

Preferred skills include lab experience and knowledge of materials science, solid and fluid mechanics, biology.

Description:
Our aim is to better understand the causation of aortic dissection and aneurysms. We examine the material properties of the porcine aorta using experimental tests and mathematical modeling. With our undergrads, we run experimental tests and gather data. Various tests are run using equipment such as a rheometer, tensile tester, and camera imaging. We need help running tests, improving experimental protocol, and designing experimental apparatuses. Our undergrads also help with collecting samples of porcine hearts and aortas and prepping samples. All undergraduate assistants have their names published in papers for projects they work on.
