Description:
|
Geothermal and Hydrocarbon drilling rigs are complex systems making use of large integrated equipment to drill and case wells for the extraction of resources from the earth’s subsurface reservoirs. These systems require the combination of many different engineering disciplines to successfully reach and extract these resources. The purpose of this project is to develop a Lab Scale Drilling Rig which mimics drilling rigs currently used in the Geothermal and Oil & Gas Industries to introduce students to the drilling process. This project will involve fabricating a lab scale drilling rig, developing software for the drilling system, creating a drilling fluid circulation system with blow-out-preventer (BOP), and -potentially- designing a rotary steerable system (RSS). This is a long-term project, with the specific directions each semester driven by the previous findings and team developments. Some specific tasks that students will be expected to do as part of the team: Assist or lead in Drilling Rig & Drilling System fabrication efforts and coding/development of software, drilling data processing (cleaning, reformatting), calibration studies on prototype drilling tools (DT), conduct drilling runs (vertical and 45deg), Adjust DT hardware & software to accuracy target, literature review. |
