Spring 2022: Community Gardening and the Promotion of Food Security and Community Building for WIC Participants

Affiliations: Aggie Research Mentoring Program
Project Leader: Andrea Malabay
ajmalabay@tamu.edu
Biomedical Sciences
Faculty Mentor: Marissa Cisneros, PhD
Meeting Times:
TBA
Team Size:
4
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
You can earn co-authorship, become a full member in the research group, health disparities research experience, possibility of attending a conference of forum
Team Needs:
We are looking for a student or students who will continue to lead on the project in later years. This project is still in its early stages and is very “organically” planned, meaning objectives and work for the project could change over time depending on the situation or the outcomes. This project deals highly with community work and disparity examination; the portion of the project that involves planting has already begun, but there are still many parts of the project that have yet to come together, which would include the analysis of field notes, attending gardening days, and keeping up with recent literature that contributes to the background and analysis for the project
Description:
The purpose of this project is to investigate and stimulate community interactions on a micro and a macro level by utilizing planters that were given to WIC participants in the BCS area. The planters will be used to grow low-maintenance crops that have the ability to be grown on your windowsill. These crops will then be harvested and be used to create meals for a family of “team size”. This will stimulate a family breakfast/lunch/dinner and it will allow us the ability to observe how long these crops will last for an entire family, and also evaluate ourselves and see how we feel as members of the B/CS community
