The proposed research project will use gas cluster ions to create pores through cluster-solid interactions. This technique can be used in the development of introducing nanopores of precisely controlled sizes with high reliability, repeatability, and scalability. This project has the potential to be extremely relevant to not only the nuclear community but a plethora of applications that could span multiple disciplines. For the nuclear community, this project can provide a realistic scalable approach to the 3He production. Other possible applications of a precisely perforated graphene membranes include water desalination, DNA sequencing , and applications for gas sensing and gas separation. (a) Preparation of monolayer and bilayer graphene on porous supporting substrate. (b) Cluster ion bombardment of a single graphene layer or a stack of graphene layers for nanopore formation, by using C60 ion accelerated via tandem particle accelerator at various energies and incident angles, for controllable pore sizes. (c) Atomic scale structural characterization of nanopores and mechanical strength testing of membranes containing different pore morphologies.
