Fall 2023: Adapting the Closed Loop Cardiovascular Model for Use in Pediatric Patients

Affiliations: Aggie Research Mentoring Program
Project Leader: Paige Hayden
paigehayden@tamu.edu
Biomedical Sciences
Faculty Mentor: Luke Lyons, Ph.D.
Meeting Times:
TBA
Team Size:
6
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
With this research, team members will be able to investigate how people learn with respect to a multitude of different areas including but not limited to informal science learning environments, undergraduate research, physiology, mathematical modeling, and/or learning progressions. The work for this project will include data collection, data analysis, formal manuscript writing for potential publication and submittals for professional research presentation (both internally at Student Research Week in the Spring ’24 semester and externally at appropriate regional or national conferences).
Team Needs:
Required Competencies/Skills Include: Interest in Mathematical Modeling, Proficient Technology Skills (Word, Excel, Google, etc), Stella Modeling Software Experience (encouraged, but not required), Undergraduates Pursuing Pre-Medical/STEM Based Degrees, Ability to Work Well in a Team Based Environment
Description:
Pediatric parameters widely differ across age ranges and vary from those of an adult. There is no current tangible pediatric cardiovascular model that can be utilized to avoid invasive procedures and trials used in children and young adults. The purpose of this mathematical model is to adapt the adult closed loop model utilizing data collected that determined formulas relevant for predicting the responses of an adult cardiovascular system, in order to develop a clinical algebraic model reducing the need for invasive procedure on pediatric patients.
