Fall 2019 – Deep-Sea Corals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

Affiliations:
Project Leader: Kourtney Higgins
k_higgins@tamu.edu
Geography
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Brendan Roark, Ph.D.
Meeting Times:
Fridays, 11am-Noon
Team Size:
3 (Team Full)
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
Hands-on laboratory experiments, including instruments and techniques used in coral sampling, data analysis; potential for conference presentations and future publication work
Team Needs:
Ideally, students should have an overall quantitative background, particularly in Earth Sciences including Chemistry and Biology. Knowledge of laboratory research practices and safety preferred. A large portion of this project is hands-on, though there are opportunities for data analysis and interpretation
Description:
Deep-sea coral communities support a diverse array of fish and invertebrates and are vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts such as fishing and ocean acidification. For this project, team members will have the opportunity to work with deep-sea coral specimens collected in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands from past research cruises. Team members will assist in sampling and analyzing coral tissues and skeletons in order to characterize deep-sea ecosystems, as well as their environmental and anthropogenic changes using stable isotopes
