Summer 2025: Beliefs, Emotions, and Attitudes about Mathematics throughout Development

Our research assistants need to have:
• Reliable access to a laptop or desktop computer with internet connection, headphones, video/audio and capabilities, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams;
• Commitment and accountability to a regular weekly schedule of 3-9 hours each week;
• Motivation and interest in developmental psychology and education research.
• Easily available to travel on campus or to local B/CS recruitment events;

Preferred:
• Majors in Psychology or Education with research-related career goals;
• Available to do at least 6 hours a week for at least two semesters in the lab.

Description:
In the BEAM Research Lab, we conduct research investigating the emotions, beliefs, and attitudes that children, adolescents, and young adults have about mathematics. We are a hybrid research lab, with communication and many project tasks done online (Microsoft Teams, Zoom), while data collection and participant recruitment for some projects are done in person.

Current and upcoming projects that undergraduate research assistants will work on include:
• Investigating the Prevalence and Influences of Math-related Social Media Posts: Search for math-related social media posts (e.g., #girlmath) on Instagram and Facebook and enter them into data entry surveys;
• Effects of ChatGPT on Self-regulated Statistics Learning: In-person experiment to test if using ChatGPT as a resource while learning basic statistical concepts can impact learning and affective outcomes in college students;
• Understanding Children’s Abilities on Different Fraction Types: Online study to investigate elementary and middle-school student’s fraction skills and math anxiety;
• Child & Adolescent Research (CAR) Registry: Attendance at recruitment events in Bryan/College Station for a child & adolescent research registry;
Note: All lab members must complete CITI program certification to collect data from human research subjects.

Overall, undergraduate lab members will have the opportunity to:
• collect data for research studies (online and in person);
• data entry for research studies (online);
• recruit participants for research studies at local events and businesses (in person);
• use a research database and read research articles on math-related learning and affect;
• learn about educational and developmental psychology research;
• translate research results and create infographics to disseminate findings;
• attend meetings to discuss project updates and other related topics (mostly virtual, a few in person on campus in Harrington Tower);
• get research credit (EPSY designation), volunteer hours, or work study.
