Description:
The purpose of this study is to understand how first-generation, low-income Students of Color experience microaffirmations at predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Specifically, we are interested in exploring the following questions: (a) What microaffirmations do first-generation, low-income Students of Color encounter, if any, at PWIs? (b) In what ways, if any, do microaffirmations help first-generation, low-income Students of Color overcome the microaggressions they experience at PWIs? We intend to use a qualitative case study methodology in this project. With this study, we aim to expand the literature on racial microaffirmations to include class-based microaffirmations. This can help understand how these mechanisms can shield first-generation, low-income Students of Color from racial and classist microaggressions, growing research that accounts for students’ multiple identities.
