Every culture has developed beautiful objects, ornamentations, and notions of beautiful bodies. Nonetheless, there seems to be a general agreement on beautiful things one observes between one culture and another. For example, one can see the beauty in Melanesian choirs, the Ghazals in Urdu, and Gregorian chants of Europe though they come from different musical traditions. Likewise, if we focus on the visual, what can we determine to be shared aspects of beauty in terms of color, structure, order, or other salient features? Or is this a futile project? Let’s figure that out together by exploring the European, Black Africana, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Aztec, and Andean philosophical traditions.
