Communication
Faculty Mentor: Tasha Dubriwny, Ph.D.
Meeting Times:
TBA
Team Size:
2
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
Students will help me work on my dissertation study, which might actually lead to new developments in the Journalism field( in terms of newsroom diversity). Dissertation might turn into a possible publication, conference paper or more. Team members will have the opportunity to stay on the project for full year
Team Needs:
Weekly meetings, coding, transcribing recruitment, eagerness to learn and develop yourself, as well as others
Description:
The purpose of the study is to conduct qualitative interviews to identify how and if African American journalists use racial frames (counter-frames, white racial frame and multiframes) when writing and reporting stories about Blacks and the Covid-19 pandemic. The study will only include the experiences and reporting practices of African American journalists, as white supremacist frames like the white racial frame are typically used to subordinate Black people. The results of the proposed study will provide knowledge about how the white racial frame affects newsroom diversity, how African American reporters use white racial frames and how white racial frames interacts with counter-frames that resists anti-Black frames, and multiframes that allow African Americans to use both counter-frames and white racial frames. African American reporters’ use or nonuse of the white racial frame can allow researchers and/or journalism institutions to approach newsroom diversity in different ways
