On a global scale, ‘sustainability’ has become a buzzword. It puts an increasing pressure on organizations to ‘do good’ or at least reduce their negative impacts on the community and environment. This trend also caught up with the sport industry, where an increasing number of teams conducts so-called sustainability projects. However, many traditional sport managers consider sustainability projects as luxury items or money guzzlers, asserting that these projects to do not add to the clubs’ financial bottom line. On the other hand, we see an increasing number of sustainability-specific sponsorship contracts in the sports industry. Here, a sport entity partners with a company with the specific goal to ‘do good’ or alleviate some pressure on the environment (e.g., waste, water, energy). Even the Olympic Games now have designated sustainability sponsors. At the same time, it can be assumed that sustainability projects, such as water and energy efficiency projects, also reduce operational costs incurred by the team. As a result, we suggest that sustainability projects may actually benefit a club’s financial bottom line. To test this assumption, we will look at the financial statements, sustainability projects and sponsorship deals of professional sport teams. The study focusses mainly on European football/soccer clubs, such as the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga. To help us in this project, we are looking for individuals who are comfortable in searching for information online, looking through financial statements and organizing and entering the information in excel. If you are looking to gain research experience partnered with business insights, you are passionate about sport and/or sustainability and like to see how sustainability is implemented in sport teams, this is the project for you! |
