Spring 2022: Research and development of scaled production of antimicrobial agents from bacteria

Special Opportunities:
All students will be trained to succeed at entry-level microbiology research technician positions and will improve their scientific communication skills. Students that are able to commit for 2 years have a good chance to be published and present posters
Team Needs:
12 to 15 hours per week of availability. Flexibility provided the week of midterms and final exams. Must register for 291 or 491. 2 years of remaining education preferred
Description:
This project will focus on development of methods for large-scale production of two unique antimicrobial compounds: occidiofungin, an antifungal, and mutacin 1140, an antibiotic. Researchers can expect to cultivate microbial cultures, work on protein purification techniques, and study the structure of the antimicrobial compounds. This project enables downstream work focused on moving these compounds into clinical studies and will orient students to industrial microbiology and pharmaceutical research
