Special Opportunities:
We work in a variety of settings including a wet lab, greenhouses, agricultural fields, as well as in collaboration with industrial livestock producers. Undergraduates will have the opportunity to work in any or all of these settings. Through projects they will hone skills in scientific literacy, experimental design, data collection, and analysis. Regular contributions may lead to publications, poster presentations, grants, and development of intellectual property.

Team Needs:
Interested applicants must complete mandatory lab-safety trainings, such as being fit with a respirator, and submit a short research proposal before joining the lab (this can later be used to apply for scholarship and grant money). While in the lab, students need to adhere to any FDA/USDA bio-safety protocols. |
Description:
My research focuses on understanding the reproductive behavior of the black soldier fly,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ-kZt4mt3Y | Hermetia illucens, within an ecological and evolutionary context so that industrial producers can rear these flies more efficiently. These flies are important for reducing organic waste, providing animals an alternative protein source to ocean-caught fish, and acting as a springboard for enterprise development.
