Spring 2020 – Effects of Medical Device Aesthetics on Pediatric Adherence to Therapy

Affiliations:
DeBakey Executive Research Leadership Program, Department of Biomedical Engineering
Project Leader: Ally Camp
allysoncamp@tamu.edu
Biomedical Engineering
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Anthony Guiseppi-Elie, Ph.D.
Meeting Times:
Tentative: Wednesdays 2:30-3:30 PM
Team Size:
5 (Team Full)
Open Spots: 0
Special Opportunities:
Experimental design skills, literature review skills, gain understanding of the medical device design process.
Team Needs:
This project requires an understanding or interest in medical device design; visualization and aesthetics; experimental design, clinical trial design, and statistics; human factors and ergonomics; and industrial design. This project is open to all majors. However, majors in biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, architecture, and visualization are preferred. Students who are familiar with AutoCAD, 3D printing, and/or clinical trial design will be highly considered. Students should be organized, diligent, and willing to learn new skills.
Description:
This project is focused on how aesthetic features of medical devices affect patient adherence to therapeutic regimens, particularly in pediatric patient populations. Pediatric and adolescent patients have a unique sensitivity to the aesthetic features of their medical devices as they develop social skills and become increasingly independent from parents and caretakers. This project involves an experiment with an upcoming medical device that is used to treat ADHD. We will create different models of the device with varying colors and textures and see how the different aesthetics affect patient adherence to treatment. If you have questions, please email Team Leader Ally Camp. If interested, please send your resume to Ally Camp (allysoncamp@tamu.edu) and Dr. Guiseppi-Elie (guiseppi@tamu.edu).
