Please refer to this page for the latest updates on how the University’s guidance on research activities during the COVID-19 pandemic impacts the Aggie Research Program
Update as of 7-22-20:
The latest guidance from the Office of the Provost and the VPR Office have indicated several relevant points for the Aggie Research Program. Namely, research projects that engage students remotely are exempt from the other guidelines issued in regards to research opportunities.
“Research projects that students can complete remotely are exempt from these guidelines.”
Apart from remote research team engagement, the other relevant guideline for ARP indicates that credit hours for in-person research projects will be permitted for the fall semester, with approval:
“Research supervisors wishing to host undergraduate researchers or student workers in research positions in fall 2020 must provide their department head with a document describing:
- COVID-related safety measures ongoing in the research space including face covering, cleaning, physical distancing, and other measures as appropriate; the addition of undergraduate students in the research space must accommodate 6 ft physical distancing.
- All research-specific safety training (COVID- and facility/space-related) that undergraduate students will be required to complete prior to initiation of research activities.”
There does not seem to be a standardized form for reporting “COVID-related safety measures” or “research-specific safety training”, so please consult with your department head to establish these as soon as possible if you are planning to host undergraduate researchers for credit hours related to your ARP project. The ARP strongly recommends that whenever possible, research team engagement, including meetings and tasks, should be conducted virtually to ensure safety for everyone.
As with other ethical and safety compliance requirements, the faculty mentor for each research team (or the team leader if they are a faculty member) is responsible for ensuring compliance with COVID-19 safety policies. Please make sure that the faculty mentor for your project is aware and discuss with them how to shape your research project with ARP to best suit your needs and the safety of everyone involved.
